What to pack in your baby's diaper bag

Here's help being ready for anything when you leave the house.

Leaving the house with a baby can be hard for new parents. It’s easier if your baby’s diaper bag is already packed. Here is a handy list of what to put inside the bag.

  • Diapers: Pack about one diaper for every 1-2 hours you’re going to be away. If you use cloth diapers, pack one or two extra diaper covers, just in case.
  • Wet wipes: Wet wipes can be used for diaper changes and any other mess. You can also carry a few damp washcloths in a plastic bag.
  • Diaper rash cream: Diaper rash can show up — or get worse — if you're away and can't change your baby's diaper as often as usual. Keep rash cream in your bag at all times.
  • Plastic bags: Use these to get rid of used diapers and for holding wet or dirty clothes until you get home.
  • Changing mat or pad: These mats are helpful when you need to change your baby on the fly, such as on the floor or in the car.
  • Burp cloths: Pack a few extra burp cloths for drool or spit-up.
  • Extra clothes: Keep a onesie and another outfit in your bag at all times. Diaper blowouts can come at any time!
  • Feeding supplies: Babies eat often. If you're going out for more than an hour or so, pack everything you need to feed your baby.
    • If you're breastfeeding, pack a water bottle, snack and extra nursing pads for yourself.
    • If you're bottle feeding, put pre-made bottles in a cooler with an ice pack.
    • If you're using formula, pack a bottle with water and another bag or bottle with the right amount of powder to be mixed when your baby needs it.
    • Once your baby starts eating solid foods, pack his food, a dish, a fork or spoon and bibs.
  • Blanket: A light blanket can be used to cover your baby in drafty rooms (if you are holding him — it’s best not to use blankets when your baby is sleeping alone). You can also set your baby on the blanket or drape it over your arm.
  • Extra pacifier: If your baby uses a binky, carry an extra one.
  • Small toys or books: When your baby gets older, you'll want some things to keep her busy. Leave the noisy toys at home.
